Step 8: Background
Kraznys was born a slave in the house of a great mason of New Ghis, and spent his early days building roads and houses for his master. He likely would have died in anonymity, but the mason had other plans. The War of the Reed Crown will probably not be recorded by future generations, but when a scholar and politician named Huhlbar began rallying his highborn friends in opposing Valyian influence on their island, it did not take long before the local governor, an aristocrat called Aurion, declared martial law. Kraznys's master, a staunch Ghiscari nationalist, freed his fittest slaves on the condition they serve as liberators of their people.
Kraznys was no great thinker in those days, but he was rational, approachable, and yet stern when it was needed. It was not long before he was being relied upon by the highborn officers for his deft touch with the other freemen, and as a sergeant, found himself leading three dozen men in the war. The details of the main campaign are irrelevent to history, as the Reed Crown's ringleaders were swiftly crushed in a month's time by Aurion's forces, but the Siege of Kraznys's Mountain remains a tale told to children on both sides of the Smoking Sea.
Kraznys's original commander, whose name is as memorable as an Oldtown whore's face, had died of burns from a dragon raid. Instead of surrendering his men to the inevitable return to slavery or worse, Kraznys, utilizing his training as a mason's slave and his ability to inspire trust, converted several iron mines into a series of interlinked outposts. For two months, Aurion laid siege to the nameless mountain, and lost countless men in the tunnels trying to root out the last vestiges of the 'Reed Crown' movement. Only later would the frustrated Valyrian learn he was not facing political refugees or rogue nobles, but merely a band of frightened slaves. In his journal, only two days before Kraznys would decide to parley, Aurion famously wrote I know not what nemesis lurks within those murky caverns, but it becomes clearer each day that conquest is less a battle of flesh and steel, but of the soul and mind. These Ghiscari must understand that a dragon's scales are just as hard within as without.
When Kraznys finally emerged into the daylight, the young man's hair had already turned gray, but his back was just as strong as the day his master freed him. After being brought before the curious Aurion, the freeman offered his own life in exchange for the freedom of his men, almost none of whom even had family names, much less political value. Instead of execution, the ambitious Valyrian made the Ghiscari his slave, a sort of living trophy he might display to his rivals and allies in the Freehold. Kraznys's men were allowed to return home to what lives remained on the wartorn isle.
Kraznys the Sullied, as he would be know from then on as both a term of respect for his resolute nature and derision for his slave status, became a staple in the household of Aurion throughout the years. Though never allowed to hold a blade in the presence of his second master, he was gifted with a fine armor and allowed to stand at certain gatherings, a reminder to those who dared oppose the great general's will.
When the Doom fell upon Valyria and Aurion declared his newfound sovereignty, Kraznys was allowed to return to the battlefield as an infantry captain, a grand promotion from his younger days. He served his master well in this brief period, and when Aurion was slain by his ambitions, the old warrior's reaction was merely a disappointment that he would never be able to thank the Valyrian for the beautiful armor he would wear the rest of his days. Today, Kraznys serves beneath Janos Turott, another old enemy turned prize for the mad emperor.
Personality:
Kraznys is a genuinely honorable man, and leads through example rather than exaltation. He has no interest in politics and is content in his role as a mercenary, while enjoying the adventure of seeing new lands and people. He likes children, is respectful to women, and is generally to easy to get along with. He runs a tight outfit, but is never cruel. He strives to be respected, not feared, and when he must be feared, he is not hated. Kraznys, despite his reputation, is not a military genius, but he is a very competent commander, and understands the consequences of war better than most.
