Just When Illamaravendre came into the services of Oriax of the Shadow is as steeped in shadow as why she came under his employ, but it has been ever since she can remember, some days that seems to be hundreds of years, other days it seems to have been merely weeks, sometimes it doesn't even extent before she was sent on her mission.
Illamaravendre was a member of a group called the Deathmongers, who acted as aids to the Shadowbinders in return for food, water, wealth and life long job security.
It was on a mission for Oriax that she obtained her Dragonbone bow, she and another Deathmonger employed by Oriax were delivering the gift of a large vat of water. Suffice to say it was not mere water. When she returned to Oriax with the bones of the dead, she was given a bow of dragonbone made from one of the victims for going above her contracted parameters.
Known as one of his most able aids, and one of the most senior, (apparently as she did not much remember on the day she was given the mission) she was given the task of delivering a Cessation of Services Order to Raithe Nightwalker, who had failed to do as tasked of him and collect some Valyrian artifacts, the doom was judged to be less than a viable excuse, as any excuse always was.
Mara set off out of Asshai and saw the sun for the first time. It was okay. After catching wind of Nightwalker when she made port, she went immediately for the location of the sellsword company and tried to execute him several times the old fashioned way with bow, and not succeeding, she tried a more hands on approach. It didn't make things easier by him knowing her from Asshai, and knew she was gunning to kill him, as everyone knew everyone else in a city with so few people and she hardly blended in easily, so sneaking up on him was hard. She tried to poison him, slit his throat, and put glass in his food, to name but a few, but all of them went awry.
In her time between trying to kill him she got to know a fair few members of the company, some of the other irregulars especially, and as her own supplies dwindled, she traded bits with them, as she was a moderate hunter. She started eating with them and even went into battle with them due to shared interest, earning a share. Her attempts to kill nightwalker got weaker and weaker as she assimilated with the company, until near a port one day, a merchant gave the company a note for her from Asshai just some black parchment with a red skull on it. She knew her time was up and in a last ditch effort to finish the job she challenged Raithe to combat. They fought for some time before the Captain of the Company ordered the fight to be stopped, not wanting to lose the valuable fighter he had in Raithe.
Held in heavy iron chains, Mara was briefly kept prisoner by the company until, knowing of her skill, the captain gave her an ultimatum: be killed or join the company under the knowledge that, if she did, her attempts to kill Raithe must stop. Not wanting to die for a silly thing like honour and homeland, she agrees, knowing she could not go back anyway. She was willing to kill for Oriax, but not die for him.
