The reason your attributes are listed in #d is because each number represents the how many dice (we use six-sided) your character rolls in tests that involve that attribute. In Combat or Intrigue your Fighting, Persuasion, or Deception attributes are tested against your opponent's Combat or Intrigue Defense. In many other tests, however, you have no human opponent, and instead it is just a test of difficulty, to see if your character can perform a specific task. An example could be an Athletics: Strength roll, if you need to lift something extremely heavy, or an Awareness roll to try an overhear two other people having a conversation.
When conducting a test, we will roll #d6 (where # represents your character's Attribute Rank), plus any Bonus Dice for your Specialties that might apply toward the test. If Bonus dice are used, then you then disregard the lowest dice of the total, equal to the number of bonus dice**, and compare it to the difficulty number for the task. Harder tasks, obviously, will have a higher target number for you to have to beat with your roll. This will all be done by the administrators.
Difficulty Ratings:
0: Automatic
3: Easy
6: Routine
9: Challenging
12: Formidable
15: Hard
18: Very Hard
21: Heroic
**If you have 4d fighting, and 2b in long blades, then in a fight where you use a long blade you roll six dice in your Fighting tests, and you keep the 4 highest of them, which count as your roll. Bonus Dice don't give you a higher test result, but they give you a better chance of getting a high test result.
Degrees of Success
The Degree of Success describes by how much your roll, if successful, has topped the target. Each degree of success brings a greater reward for your test result; in Combat, each degree of success multiplies your base damage.
Test Result Exceeds Difficulty by:
0–4: One, marginal degree of success
5–9: Two, great degree of success
10–14: Three, incredible degree of success
15+: Four, astonishing degree of success
