Background:
Saera is the bastard daughter of the Valyrian nobleman and dragonrider, Aeryn Belaerys, and his paramour, Vaella Malorian, the daughter of a minor nobleman. Raised in Valyrian before the Doom, Saera was the child of Aeryn's middle age after he fell out of love with his wife. All Saera's trueborn siblings are much older than her. Her early years saw Saera and her mother loving in an annex at Aeryn's palace, and while she was her father's delight and treated as a little lady by the servants, and by her parents' guests her trueborn siblings and their mother shunned her entirely. Saera was not allowed to even be in the same room as her father's wife, on penalty of a whipping. This gave her a natural suspicion of her father's closest relations, except for her childless uncle Gael, a famous general, who made no secret of his preference for Saera. He showered the girl with gifts, took her riding on his dragon and, when she asked to learn the art of swordmanship, engaged her a personal tutor at his own expense.
In her adolescence, Aeryn tried to betroth Saera to a youth from a good family, but she had no desire to marry young and wasn't particularly fond of her father's choice. She refused, even when her father became angry and insisted that her betrothal would benefit the family fortunes, and thus Saera herself. The relationship with her father began to deteriorate when Aeryn forced the betrothal to go ahead. To make matters worse, Vaella encouraged the match. And then, one day, the youth came upon the twelve year old Saera alone in the training yard as she waited for her sparring partner to arrive. When the youth pressed a kiss upon her, she pushed him away and told him that she hadn't given her permission for him to touch her. Upon his reply that they were betrothed and he could do as he pleased, Saera seized her wooden training sword and broke his nose and two of his toes. The betrothal was swiftly dissolved after that and though it earned Saera a beating, she considered the price worth paying. Her father then sent her to live with her uncle Gael, who had agreed to undertake a command post in Elyria. There she stayed for several years, training at arms and retaliating with violence when any boy or man pressed unwanted attentions upon her. She kissed a few boys too but as she fought more than she kissed, her manners earned her the nickname Lady Merciless. She lost her maidenhead on the eve of her sixteenth birthday, after drinking too much wine during a picnic under the stars. It was for her sixteenth birthday that Gael presented her with the Valyrian steel blade she would name Lady Merciless, in honour of the name bestowed upon her by the local youths.
Gael obtained a junior officer's post for Saera with the Elyrian military. There she served with courage and obedience, first in Elyria where he could watch over her. At the time of the Doom, she was serving as captain of of the honour guard to a Valyrian nobleman holding a diplomatic post in Qohor. After the Doom struck, Saera was stranded with the rest of the diplomatic party while her world fell to pieces. Then the dragonrider Aurion came. Saera pledged her sword to him and, when Aurion was killed, she became one of the founder members of the mercenary band.
As most of the mercenaries are men, Saera guards her person and her privacy very well. She can be charming or stern according to her circumstances and after a few youthful indiscretions got her into trouble in Elyria, has made it her personal policy never to sleep with the men she serves with, or her employers. She keeps her personal life very private and woe betide any man who steps out of line. It is said that at least a score of the mercenaries have been marked with Lady Mercilesss' steel kiss after they sought to try their luck.
