Step 8: Background
Ibbit doesn’t remember much of his past life before joining the mercenary company, what he does remember from his days of Ibbish is that he was constantly mocked and ridiculed for his size, among the short and squat citizens of Ib and for being dim-witted throughout his life. This constant abuse to his self-esteem only worsened his condition and his mind grew backwards staying at a maturity level that was mostly expected from a little kid. Ibbit doesn’t remember from who he learned to fight, but he remembers being told that it was his only saving grace, and so tried to dedicate himself towards mastering the use of his axe. Fighting turned into Ibbit’s savior and prevented him from being stuck with the mind of a child, though what damage was done to him in irreversible, he was able to keep some semblance of himself.
Ibbit soon fled Ibb after a part of himself realized that the place was no longer welcoming to him, his parents had cast him aside, and he had no friend to speak of. He stowed away on a trading ship leaving the port of Ibben and was set for the mainland. Once there he traveled south where he met an up and coming officer of a mercenary company, this man would soon be made commander of the company and offered Ibbit a place on his personal guard after witnessing the fool in a skirmish that he had gotten himself into. Ibbit entered the company feeling he belonged but was soon struck with a much more aggressive and harsh verbal and sometimes physical abuse of the rest of the company men, the commander was quick to try and stem these insults but it wasn’t until Ibbit’s first real fight with the company that he earned the respect of most of the army, when they saw what he was capable of doing with his axe. Ibbit has been with the company since then, despite his commander friend having died and several others being moved through the title.
