Background:
Like the cursed lands from which he hails, the origins or even the age of the man that is known as Raithe Nightwalker are shrouded in mystery. Children are never seen in Asshai, possibly lending some credit to the Dothraki belief that its people are birthed from the Shadow itself. What is known is that Raithe resided in the middle class, arguably the least enviable in a city in which all food and water is an imported precious commodity. The wealthy could afford the slaves required to mine the wealth of gold and gems from the mountains that circle Asshai with which to buy the goods, while the slaves themselves at least had the comfort of being provided food and water by their masters. Most caught in the middle either resort to dark arts to survive by unnatural means or alchemy in order to make their own wealth, but a brave or crazy few become night-walkers. These are the men that dare go upriver past the walls of Asshai, into the heart of darkness itself in search of dark artifacts and ingredients of arcane power to be sold to sorcerers and travelers at the black bazaars of Asshai. Raithe became one such man.
None can say how long Raithe spent in the heart of the Shadow over dozens of rangings, for how do you judge the passage of days in perpetual blackness? However, he always returned with enough goods to ensure he wanted for neither safe food nor fresh water. Coveted items such as demon teeth, dragonbone, and parts from abominations without name in any tongue were often amongst his bounties; along with the occasional dark artifact whispered to be from Stygai, the corpse city itself. The worst of the horrors he witnessed deep in the Shadow are rarely spoken of.
As his reputation grew, Raithe garnered the attention and patronage of the shadowbinders, the most powerful and mysterious of Asshai's sorcerers. One such man (if they can be called that) by the name of Oriax of the Shadow, hired him to travel to the far-off continent of Essos to acquire artifacts from Valyria. The sorcerers of Valyria were the only that could rival the Ashaii in magical prowess, rousing much suspicion and curiosity amongst the darkest citizens of the Shadow City. The shadowbinder paid an exhorbitant fee to have Raithe sent to Essos, along with all the food and fresh water required for such a voyage, not to mention gold and gems required for any expenses incurred. As fate would have it, his first introduction to the bright lands that stood in stark contrast to his own home was the anarchy of the Doom. With Valyria in ash, all hope of returning with his prize was lost, and even a man that had faced the worst horrors beyond the walls of Asshai was not suicidal enough to return to a shadowbinder empty handed.
He wandered for some time, becoming accustomed to the light of the sun and taking work as a hired blade in exchange for food and water. Eventually his travels led him to Qohor, where he was conscripted by Aurion for his quest of hubris to become emperor. Raithe took an immediate dislike to not the man, but his dragon, the creatures a familiar threat in the Shadow. He did not understand the strange custom of riding beasts as it was, let alone why anyone would tame and ride a monstrosity. When the mutinee came, he was of the first to brave combat with the creature. Using his pale white blade,Bloodmoon, he tore the membrane of one of the dragon's wings to shreds, grounding the creature for long enough that one of the other men could silence the abomination. Since then, Raithe has served in the irregulars of the company, putting his deadly talents to use.
Bloodmoon
On one of his rangings into the Shadow, Raithe witnessed something he had thought impossible, blinding white light in the perpetual darkness that fell from the sky. Investigating where the heavenly body had fallen, he found a strange white ore. Upon his return, the denizens of Asshai had varying theories on what he had seen. Many claimed it was a fallen star. The moonsingers claimed it was a piece of their holy deity. The worshippers of the Black Goat, Pale Child, and Lion of Night each had their own explanation. Concerned more with its properties than origin, Raithe had the material forged into a greatsword of strength, sharpness, and lightness only comparable to Valyrian Steel. Christened Bloodmoon, it served as his light in the darkness, and his trusty protection against the horrors that inhabit the Shadow.
The blade is long and pale, with a wire thin scratch winding down its length. Raithe has never spoken of what monstrous abomination could have left a mark in metal of such quality. The countless foldings of the metal allowed a very narrow blade to be forged, as capable of sliding between ribs as of lopping off limbs. The hilt is forged of dragonbone harvested from the Shadow and crossguard has intricate carvings of demonic talons and an eye in its center.
