"Better to have one capable man, than ten mediocre." she said to the man with them, "Excellence is priceless."
"I am not sure the training area will be big enough." She said, and then looked up to the blue sky, "What is the expression, for you men, it will be the funeral." She then looked to her bow, "Would you like me to help teach them about fighting under arrowfire?"

"Have you actually been in a real battle, Miss? When you see these ten mediocre men coming at a lonesome you, you'd wish to have some mediocre men by your side." Jano stated. "Numbers are priceless, if you have enough to spare."

"If you like. It is no easy thing to stand firm under a hail of arrows, even with the protection of a shield and armour. When I served in the Valyrian army, I knew some men who could handle it only with wine in their bellies and I've no doubt a few of my own men are the same. Not all men are born brave and they say there is no such thing as an old, bold mercenary." Saera smiled as she said it, because it had been one of her uncle's favourite sayings. If only he could see her now.

"I am always available to shoot at people running round in the metal suits." she said, stroking the limb of one half of her bow, the corner of her lip twitching, in what would have passed for whistful contemplation in Asshai, where no one smiled fully in the outdoors.
"As for battles, they are pointless when you have the power of the shadows on your side," she said, in reference to the shadowbinders and the power they wielded, no army would ever be able to take Asshai with them, not that these green people would ever want to, they would not last a minute near the acetic rivers.

"Tales from weary fishermen and old crones..." Jano said, scorn dripping from his mouth like venom., he did'nt believe a single thread of those stories about shadowbinders.
"You heathens from east, believing on your false gods..." He spat. "No men can wield such power, only the Goat himself."

"Ah, well, we cannot all have the mastery of shadows, can we?" Saera remarked. Not that she wanted to, since she had heard that it was magic that had destroyed Valyria and that made her unwilling to distrust magic and sorcerers of all kinds. But it would be bad manners to say that, of course, so she said "Then let's see what you can do. Though you are just one woman. Unless you can turn yourself into a whole troop of archers, I cannot imagine how you are to simulate the effect of a hail of arrows upon my poor infantrymen. One arrow is rather less frightening than one hundred arrows raining down together."

"I only fire from my bow with intent when firing at men," she said, "if you really value numbers of mettle, then i give you a chance now to rescind that offer. I will only offer it once."

"Fine, then. Do you only fire at men?" Saera wondered. "A bad officer does not cower away when her men are under fire. I shall stand with them."

" This is going to be good..." Jano said is his native language, crossing his arms and giving a smug grin. "These women and their bluffs..."
"Come on, Mara. If you're going to shoot someone, shoot someone with real guts. Let this be a proof that The Goat is the one and only." He put himself in front of Saera, those assha'i needed to know who was the real fighter in the Band.
"Be kind enough and hold Maelys, Miss Saera." The Black Goat handed the creature over to her and stood staring manically, he knew she would'nt have the gall to actually hit him.

Mara smiled then, showing pearl white teeth. It was not a pleasant smile, lighting up her face with something dark. Sinister. "hiding behind your man? Touching."
She turned on the spot then and strode to a spot further away from the group, readying her bow as she walked.
When she got to an appropriate distance, Mara waited for them to start fighting, and then loosed her first arrow, She was not going to aim, as it would be unrealistic to what she had experienced in battles before, but Jano Turrot had insinuated she did not have the gaul to fire at him and so aimed for first one directly for him, before then firing into the mix of soldiers.

Jano's unexpectedly chivalry had Saera wondering what he wanted from her. She didn't believe mercenaries were chivalrous to women for no reason, but she allowed him to hand over the lemur and stood stroking the creature's fur.
"As you wish, Turott," she said formally, as she moved to one side. She had a fondness for furry little animals and that meant she could not risk the creature's life under Mara's arrows, particularly when it's master had just performed a gallant action for her sake.

"Learn with the master..."
Jano readied his Arakh and charged at the oncoming opponents, ready to evade the arrows if needed.

Ibbit sits up somewhere near the middle of the two parties, having been woken up by the arguing archer and melee fighters. He watches as the man rushes towards the archer and even a dullard like himself thinks this is silly.

(Alright I volunteered to roll this out so folks could see how it's done in this system with a relatively simple combat roll, so I'm going to go step by step. This is going to seem pretty complicated as I'm going step by step, but it's easy to pick up.)
1. Typically we'd start with an Agility (Quickness) rolls do decide who attacks first, but as Mara is shooting at Jano from range, we just need to roll for her.
2. Mara has 5d Marksmanship (2b) bows, which means you would normally roll 7 dice and take the best 5. Her Expertise (Bows) benefit gives her +1d for her roll, so she takes the best 6 instead. She ends up with a 26. Her dragonbone bow gives her +2 to this roll, so she ends up with 28.
3. We compare this to Jano's combat defense. He has a combat defense of 9, but his boiled leather armor comes with a penalty of 2, so his effective CD is 7. 28-7=21
4. According to the degrees of success chart, anything aver 15 is 4 degrees of success. Mara's bow does Agil+2 base damage. Mara has 4 agiligy, so the bow does 6 base damage. The heirloom trait adds +1 to the base damage, so it does 7 base damage. We multiply the base damage by the degrees of success to calculate the damage. 7x4=28.
4. We then subtract Jano's armor from the damage. His armor would usually negate 3 damage, but between Mara's longbow and benefits she has 3 piercing, so his armor is useless.
5. So Mara does 28 damage to Jano, which is much more than the 9 health that he has, so he'll need to take an injury or wound to avoid death. An injury would inflict a -1 penalty to all rolls and allow Jano to mitigate 3 points of the damage. This will do him no good as 25 damage would still exceed his 9 health, so he'll have to take a wound. This negates all damage, but inflicts a -1d to all his future rolls.)
Jano realized far too late that playing chicken with an Asshai'i assassin wasn't the wisest of decisions. He heard the twang of the bowstring as he took his step forward, the arrow moving too fast for his eye to catch, let alone dodge. As he looked down, he saw an odd sight: a black shaft capped with feathers that was protruding from his abdomen. What followed was blinding pain as he fell to the ground clutching his burning guts, in shock from pain as much as the fact that she had actually shot him.
(Jano takes a wound and yields)

" Damn you, bloody woman. " Jano was taken aback as he fell to his knees gripping his bowels, he was expecting she'd loose some aimless arrows over the crowd not that she'd actually shoot him.
"You assha'i whore, you're a dead woman... I kill you for this." He tried to roar at her, but the pain made it sound no more than a whimpering whisper. "Someone get me to a surgeon."
